Meningitis B & Meningitis ACWY Vaccines

Meningitis is a life-threatening infection which causes the lining around the brain and spinal cord to become inflamed. It is usually caused by bacteria or a virus. In children and adults, meningitis usually causes a high fever, vomiting and dislike of bright lights or altered mental state. In babies it can be difficult to gauge symptoms. If not treated quickly it can lead to deafness, blood poisoning, brain damage and even death. Our private clinics provide a number of vaccination services that offer some protection against meningitis.

Young people starting university or college are urged to get a vaccine against meningitis. Public Health England says the MenACWY vaccine will help protect against meningitis W in particular as new university students are at risk as they often mix closely with groups of unfamiliar people - some who may unknowingly carry the bug.

Meningitis W infection is fatal in one in 10 cases and can lead to long-term health problems including deafness, epilepsy and amputations.
