What STI tests do we provide?

There are many different Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and we provide tests for a range of those. We can help you decide which of the tests you should choose.

From tests for HIV to test for a range of other STIs including Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Hep B & Hep C Testing, we can help you whether you are worried about a recent sexual encounter, or you just want peace of mind. We will get your results for you and advise you should you test positive for any form of STI.

Why should you get tested for STIs?

Being tested for an STI is important not only for your own health but also for those you have come into sexual contact with and for any future partners. Here are some reasons you should get tested:

  • Anyone might have an STI including yourself, and these are often symptomless
  • Most STIs can be treated easily with antibiotics, especially if tackled early on
  • STIs can have serious health consequences, including in some cases infertility in both men and women
  • Testing is the right thing to do and gives peace of mind to you and any sexual partners past and present
  • Getting tested is easy and done in a non-judgemental environment

How quickly will I get the results of my STI test?

Your results are 100% confidential and your NHS GP will NOT be informed of the test or results and it will not appear on your medical records. Results for blood, urine and PCR tests are often returned within 48hours by text message, over the telephone, by email, by post or in person if requested.

What STI Tests Are Available?

We offer the four main STI tests which can detect the HIV virus depending on when you may have been exposed:

  2. 10 Day HIV DNA PCR Test – Take 10+ days after exposures
  3. 28 Day HIV DUO Test – Take 28+ days after exposure

Most HIV tests can be done via a blood sample.

  • Instant STI Test

For exposures occurring 26+ days before your instant STI test. Rapid results are available within 30 minutes

An Instant STI test provides rapid results, typically within 60 seconds. The INSTI HIV-1/HIV-2 Rapid Antibody Test is a rapid in vitro qualitative test for the detection of antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 and Type 2 in human whole blood, finger stick blood, serum or plasma. As an antibody test, this is only appropriate for potential exposures that occurred at least 3 months before testing.

  • HIV Antibody Test

90 Day HIV Testing for exposures occurring 90 days before your HIV Test. Same day / 24hour results in most cases.

This is 99.9% accurate and the traditional HIV antibody test which GUM clinics offer. An antibody is the immune system’s response to disease. If you have been infected with HIV, your body will produce antibodies which are typically detectable through HIV testing after 3 months.

  • HIV DUO Test

28 Day HIV Testing for exposures occurring 28 days before your HIV test. Results expected within 1-2 days.

The HIV DUO test is extremely accurate 99.8% and can detect the HIV virus 28 days after infection. It combines an antibody test for the HIV 1 & 2 strains of the virus with an antigen test for the p24 antigen. During the first few weeks after someone becomes infected with HIV, p24 is produced rapidly and is detectable in the blood. Recommended by the 2008 UK Guidelines on HIV testing.

  • HIV RNA PCR Test

10 Day HIV Testing for exposures occurring 10 days before your HIV test. Results expected within 5-7 days.

This test is roughly 96% accurate and can detect the presence of the HIV virus 10 days after exposure. PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a testing method that extracts and amplifies the genetic material of HIV. Because HIV testing using PCR DNA checks for the virus itself, it can provide a positive result sooner than other HIV tests.HIV PCR testing is not 100% reliable and has a higher incidence of false positives than other HIV tests. If you do receive the 10 day test, you should follow up with the HIV Duo Test at 28 days after the suspected infection.
