What Is Radiology?

An area of medicine that utilises imaging techniques and technology to prevent, diagnose and treat medical conditions and diseases.

What Is an Ultrasound?

Sometimes called a sonogram, an ultrasound scan is a pain free radiology exam that sends sound waves into the body to form images.

Types of Ultrasounds

External – The transducer is placed over the body

Internal – The transducer is placed into the body

Endoscopic – The transducer is attached to an endoscope (long, thin tube) and moved further into the body

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?

There are no risks or side-effects from sound waves and no exposure to radiation in an ultrasound.

During an internal ultrasound some latex may be involved so it is important to let us know if you are allergic.

During endoscopic ultrasounds sore throats and bloating are a possibility but both are temporary.
