What are the benefits of private prescriptions?

There are a number of reasons why someone may choose a private prescription service over the NHS. Often it is due to convenience, whether it is trickier to get an appointment to see your GP or the private clinic is just in a more accessible location for you.

Another reason is the range of medications available. Often on the NHS there are certain conditions that cannot be given a prescription for, such as loss of hair, loss of libido or priligy (premature ejaculation). Other times, there are conditions, such as erectile dysfunction, where you’re only eligible for an NHS prescription if you meet strict criteria. None of these setbacks exist with private prescriptions.

There are some medications which are available on the NHS for first-timers, but you may be denied further treatment. An example is for anti-smoking medication, where the NHS may reject to offer you a prescription if you lapse. A private prescription would therefore be more suitable.

Finally, a private doctor is not limited by the restrictions on the NHS to offer the cheapest treatment option with the minimum number of tablets. This means you can get a more tailored service, with the right combination of medications and the correct length of medical plan to make sure you receive the full treatment you need.

How much does a private prescription cost?

A private prescription costs £45, but remember that this gives you access to a wealth of further treatment options than an NHS prescription would do, and ensures you’re given the appropriate medication to fit your specific requirements.
