Following assessment and diagnosis by our doctor, Ghosh Medical Group can offer private growth hormone treatment to patients across Liverpool, Chester and the Wirral. This treatment is available for both adults and children, subject to the determination of clinical need.

Who needs growth hormone treatment?

As a child grows, their progress is monitored and charted my means of 'growth curves'. Most children follow this curve to some extent, falling within accepted parameters. If a child's growth does not meet the expected range or slows down significantly, it might be time for further investigation by a medical professional. Dr Ghosh can discuss your child's growth progress with you, and carry out any necessary tests to assess their progress.

Sometimes, a medical cause such as a deficiency or illness can be identified. Treating the cause can often kickstart growth again. However, sometimes there is no identifiable reason for reduced growth (often referred to as 'idiopathic short stature'). In these cases, growth hormone treatment might be necessary to help the child return to or reach the growth curve.

What does growth hormone treatment involve?

The growth hormone is a chemical called somatotropin, which is usually produced within the brain. If there is too little of this chemical occurring naturally, then it can be injected into the body in order to stimulate growth. Private growth hormone treatment is an ongoing process, beginning with a consultation and a series of tests at our clinic.

If growth hormones are prescribed, these are given as a subcutaneous injection. The doctor or nurse will show you how to administer these injections. You or your child will need to give daily injections for as long as the course of treatment is prescribed.

In order to ensure that the treatment is working and that there are no complications, you will need to attend regular appointments with the doctor. Tests will be carried out to ensure that the hormones are not affecting any aspect of the patient's wellbeing, or exacerbating any underlying conditions. Some pre-existing conditions are incompatible with our private growth hormone treatment; your doctor will advise you if this is the case, and discuss alternative therapies or treatments.

Ongoing treatment

The amount of growth hormone administered needs to be assessed regularly and might be changed frequently to achieve the best results. Over time, growth spurts might bring the patient back to within the 'acceptable' curve, and at this point, treatment might be reduced or even stopped completely. Your doctor will discuss the treatment plan for you or your child, and update you regularly.

Treatment of growth hormone deficiency in adults

Growth hormone treatment is primarily associated with paediatric medicine, as it is most commonly used in children with idiopathic growth disorders who are failing to reach the expected height and weight targets. However, it can also be very beneficial in some adults who experience problems with the production of growth hormones. With our treatment of growth hormones, Liverpool, the Wirral and Chester residents of all ages can improve their health and wellbeing.

Growth hormone causes physical growth, but it also has important functions within the body. These include:

- Regulating body fluids

- Strengthening and supporting bone density and muscle structure

- Ensuring proper heart and lung function

- Keeping the brain balanced and the individual mentally fit

Adults without the right level of growth hormone risk conditions such as osteoporosis, and problems with their metabolism - including the processing of glucose and cholesterol. These can have serious health implications, so it is essential to seek medical advice if you have any of the following symptoms:

- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

- Fatigue and brain fog

- Anxiety and depression

- Low energy levels, especially during physical activity

These can be signs of a pituitary gland problem or another condition. Your doctor can carry out tests to determine the cause of your symptoms, and offer the necessary treatment to help you recover.
