Ghosh Medical now offer colon capsule endoscopy (PillCam) services in Liverpool
What is a colon capsule endoscopy (PillCam)?
A colon capsule endoscopy (PillCam) is an easy-to-swallow capsule, about the size of a large vitamin pill, which contains a small disposable camera. The camera takes thousands of pictures as it travels along your gut, which are then transmitted wirelessly to a data recorder that you wear on your waist. The test is complete once the capsule has passed through your bowel and out into the toilet.
Why might I need a colon capsule endoscopy (PillCam)?
Bowel cancer is the 4th most common type of cancer. Based on the results of your stool test, a colon capsule endoscopy (PillCam) may be appropriate in order to examine the health of your colon further and detect any colonic polyps, which are precursors to colon cancer. Finding such polyps at an early stage can help to prevent bowel cancer, or make it easier to treat.

How to prepare for your capsule endoscopy procedure
Prior to the procedure, you will be required to drink a laxative solution in order to empty and clean your colon. This will allow the camera to capture clear images, aiding an accurate diagnosis.
What happens during the capsule endoscopy procedure?
After swallowing the capsule, clear images of the colon will be captured. You will be required to take extra laxatives, and potentially a prokinetic tablet, to allow the capsule to move through the bowels before the battery runs out.
To aid natural movement of the capsule through the bowels, we recommend remaining active. You should also avoid lying down or sleeping during the procedure.
The images are then transmitted to a data recorder that you wear in a pouch and strap on your shoulder. Once the procedure is complete, your doctor will download the data and examine the images.
Please note: The capsule endoscopy procedure is suitable for use in adults and children from the age of 8 years.
