Lateral flow antigen testing is a rapid method used to detect the presence of COVID 18 viral antigens, which are proteins found on the surface of the SARS CoV 2 virus. These tests are commonly used for screening purposes where timely results are required and are most effective when viral load is highest.

At Ghosh Medical Group, lateral flow testing is delivered by trained healthcare professionals in a clinical environment, following current UK infection prevention and control standards.

When Lateral Flow Testing May Be Appropriate

Lateral flow antigen testing may be considered in the following circumstances:

  • Rapid screening for individuals with symptoms suggestive of COVID 19
  • Screening before contact with vulnerable individuals
  • Workplace or organisational screening programmes
  • Event or group screening where immediate results are required
  • Personal reassurance where testing is clinically appropriate

Lateral flow tests are not a substitute for PCR testing in situations where higher sensitivity is required or where formal laboratory confirmation is necessary.

Clinical Use and Limitations

Lateral flow tests detect viral antigens rather than genetic material. This allows for faster results but with lower sensitivity compared to PCR testing.

Important limitations include:

  • Reduced sensitivity in asymptomatic individuals
  • False negative results can occur, particularly early or late in infection
  • A negative result does not exclude infection
  • Positive results may require confirmatory PCR testing depending on context

Results may always be interpreted alongside symptoms, exposure history, and clinical judgement.

How Lateral Flow Testing is Performed

A sample is collected using a nasal swab. The process may be briefly uncomfortable but should not be painful. The sample is then processed using an antigen detection device, with results typically available within 15 to 30 minutes.

Possible outcomes include:

  • Negative
  • Positive
  • Inconclusive

An inconclusive result indicates that the test could not be reliably interpreted and repeat testing may be required.

Understanding Your Test Result

Negative Result

A negative result indicated that COVID 19 antigens were not detected at the time of testing. This does not guarantee absence of infection and does not remove the need for appropriate precautions if symptoms develop.

Positive Result

A positive result indicates detection of COVID 19 antigens and suggests current infection. Individuals should follow current public health guidance and consider confirmatory PCR testing if required.

Inconclusive Result

An inconclusive result means the test could not be interpreted. Repeat testing may be advised.

Lateral Flow Testing for Travle and Documentation

Some destinations, airlines, or organisations may accept antigen testing as part of their entry or screening requirements. Acceptance criteria vary and may change without notice.

Patients are responsible for confirming:

  • The type of test required
  • Timing of testing before travel or entry
  • Certification or documentation format
  • Whether antigen testing is accepted

Ghosh Medical Group cannot guarantee acceptance of test results by third parties.

Clinical Standards and Governance

All lateral flow testing services at Ghosh Medical Group are provided in line with:

  • Current UK clinical guidance
  • Infection prevention and control standards
  • CQC regulatory requirements
  • Confidential handling of medical information

Testing is carried out by trained healthcare professionals, with clear explanation of results and limitations.

Individual and Group Testing

Lateral flow testing may be arranged for individuals or organised groups, including workplace or event screening. Group testing should be planned in advance to ensure appropriate clinical governance and infection control arrangements.
