"As a psychotherapist, I've had the privilege of helping many people with life's unique challenges: making sense of difficult emotions, improving relationships with others, adjusting to difficult events, and making positive changes in life. I can help you too."
Before Stephen became a psychotherapist, his career focused on helping to resolve interpersonal conflicts between colleagues and neighbours. However, in his work as a professional mediator, he often found that people's suffering was exacerbated by deeply personal issues outside of their neighbourhood and workplace problems.
In his one to one meetings, people frequently raised problems with low self esteem, stress, sleepless nights, bereavement, family conflict, relationship breakdown, uncertainty about the future, substance misuse and addiction. Stephen sympathised with them, and saw so much need for professional therapeutic help. This inspired Stephen to explore a career as a professional psychotherapist.
Over four years of intensive training, Stephen built on his experience of being present for people and explored in depth the best ways to help my clients navigate life's challenges. Stephen joined the National Counselling Society as a professionally qualified accredited member, meaning that he follows the Society’s code of ethics for good practice and adheres to their recommendation for regular clinical supervision. Additionally, Stephen holds an enhanced DBS check and is fully insured.
Across years of psychotherapy practice since qualifying, Stephen helped his clients through adversity and seen them emerge stronger, more resilient and authentic to themselves.
Stephen's approach to counselling is "person centred" - meaning that he views you as the expert about yourself. His role is to assist you in bringing clarity to your thoughts and emotions, and to create a safe space to express yourself. Stephen offers a warm and empathetic space to explore all issues impacting on your life, at a pace that suits you.
With your agreement, Stephen may draw on other therapy techniques and simple but effective interventions including meditation and breathwork. He will guide you in using these tools to balance your nervous system and reach a calm state, so that you may call upon them between sessions.
Stephen has received excellent feedback from previous clients, saying they quickly felt at ease in his presence. They say that being able to talk freely, without being treated as broken or given unwanted advice, has helped to foster their own understanding of their thoughts, habits and difficulties. Being able to speak openly and fully, without being judged, has helped them to be more open and authentic in other relationships, more self accepting, and more confident in implementing the changes they want to make in their lives.
