Meningitis B Vaccine Bexsero is available at our private clinics in Liverpool & Chester

The Meningitis B vaccine called Bexsero is licensed in the UK for use in the prevention of a serious cause of meningitis. Bexsero offers protection against the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis group B.

In children and adults, meningitis usually causes a high fever, vomiting and dislike of bright lights or altered mental state. In babies it can be difficult to gauge symptoms.

Bexsero is a non-live vaccine, safe to give to babies & infants from the age of 2 months. Depending on the age at vaccination, your child will need two or three doses of the Bexsero vaccines in their primary course, with a possible booster. Adults require just 2 doses.

Vaccine Cost:

  • Bexsero - £155 per dose including appointment fees.

Vaccine Course:

Infants 2 months to 5 months of age

  • A primary course of 3x injections of the vaccine
  • 1 Month minimum interval between each injection
  • A fourth dose (booster) given between 12-23 months of age

Infants 6 months to 11 months of age

  • A primary course of 2x injections of the vaccine
  • 2 Month minimum interval between each injection
  • A third dose (booster) given between 12-23 months of age

Children 12 months to 23 months of age

  • A primary course of 2x injections of the vaccine
  • 2 Month minimum interval between each injection
  • A third dose (booster) given after an interval of 12-23 months from 2nd dose

Children 2 years to 10 years of age

  • A primary course of 2x injections of the vaccine
  • 2 Month minimum interval between each injection

Adolescents (from 11 years of age) and adults

  • A primary course of 2x injections of the vaccine
  • 1 Month minimum interval between each injection

Dr Ghosh is based at a number of clinics across the North West including Liverpool, Wirral and Chester. We hold a number of clinics each week especially for baby and childrens appointments where vaccinations can be administered as follows:

Wednesday AM - Chester, Cheshire

Home Visits & Weekends

We can provide vaccinations during home visits during the evening and at weekends. This should be arranged with prior notice should you need this service.

Home visits are strictly by request and diary permitting as we can not guarantee GP availability.

 

Additional Information

We are happy to make an entry into your childs vaccination record in their red book so that you can keep an up to date records. Please bring this along to each appointment.

Pain relief is optional for vaccinations and a number of options can be made available upon prior request including an anaesthetic based cream to help reduce injection pain. Most parents are advised to bring suitable pain relief to their appointments such as Oral Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. The GP will happily advise whether a dose is suitable.

Possible Side Effects from Meningitis B Vaccination - Bexsero

Like all vaccines, the Bexsero vaccine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. When Bexsero is given to you or your baby or child, the very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people) that your child may get (reported in all age groups) are:

- pain/tenderness at the injection site

- redness of the skin at the injection site 

- swelling of the skin at the injection site, hardness of the skin at the injection site

The following side effects may also occur after receiving this vaccine. 

infants and children (up to 10 years of age) - very common (these may affect more than 1 in 10 people).

- fever (≥38oC)

- loss of appetite

- tenderness or discomfort at the injection site (including severe injection site tenderness resulting in crying when injected limb is moved)

- skin rash (uncommon after booster)

- sleepiness

- feeling irritable

- unusual crying

- vomiting

- diarrhoea
