Travel SafeBox

I would advise most parents not to travel till 4-6 weeks after your baby is born - longer if after a caesarean for mum or if there has been any post delivery complications - bleeding, infection or Special Care Unit for baby.

Wait till at least your child’s first set of vaccinations to help protect against disease - ideally 4 months is best to travel as a primary course of most vaccinations have been completed by them.

Be prepared and take a travel kit  -

I include taking these items as often minor illnesses or discomforts such as teething can be easily settled if these are to hand and can prevent a holiday from being unnecessarily stressful.

I’ve prepared one which you can take a look at - NB: check the ages of the medicines with your child’s age as some do differ:

  • Paracetamol
  • SPF 50 / Block
  • Bite Relief
  • Antihistamine
  • Plasters
  • Thermometer
  • Medical Card - inc. names of medication they are on or medical conditions - translate it into language you are going too.
  •  European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

 Always take:

  • Small Fan
  • Soft clothing in layers - inc Hat and Sunglasses - remove if hot as baby’s can not regulate their body temperature and rely on us to check them
  • Take Extra: Water / Babys feed /Formula - incase of delays always better to take more.
  • Wipes Wipes Wipes - babies love to touch everything and then taste it - wiping there hands stops spread of viruses and keep play surfaces clean.

On the Flight

Protect infant ears - as they are more delicate and can be effected by the air pressure.

Tips: Feed when taking off or landing - older children can suck on a sweet or lolly this

If sniffling/teething take decongestants or nasal spray as airplanes air conditioning can dry up the soft mucus lining of your baby's nose and this can stop the discomfort.

Ear plugs / Defenders can help if child is scared on plane due to noise and helps with pressure.

Key Points:

Choose your destination well. Shorter flight times direct flights all help. Baby orientated resorts. Some will even buy in formula and nappies for you to save you from carrying them.

Child friendly airports and air lines with better changing facilities not over crowded which will make things like breastfeeding easier if you have more room or can go to an area quieter on the plane.

Doctors Advise:

Travelling with your baby is not as stressful as you may think - if you are prepared and choose the right place it’s often a great time to spend with your little one without the distraction of home life visitors and work pressures! We in fact did this when my daughter was 6 months old and called it our little "Baby Moon" where we had a little piece and quite with our little one all on our own.
