More Information About Our HIV Tests:
Instant HIV Testing (For exposures occurring 3 months before your HIV test):
Instant HIV tests provide rapid results, typically within 60 seconds. The INSTI™ HIV-1/HIV-2 Rapid Antibody
Test is a rapid in vitro qualitative test for the detection of antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Type 1 and Type 2 in human whole blood, finger stick blood, serum or plasma. As an antibody test, this is
only appropriate for potential exposures that occurred at least 3 months before testing.
Type of Test: Blood sample from finger tip | Results: Usually within 60 seconds
HIV Antibody Test (For exposures occurring 90 days before your HIV Test):
This is the traditional HIV antibody test which GUM clinics offer. An antibody is the immune system's
response to disease. If you have been infected with HIV, your body will produce antibodies which are
typically detectable through HIV testing after 3 months.
Type of Test: Blood Sample | Results: Same day in most cases
HIV DUO Testing (For exposures occurring 28 days before your HIV test):
The HIV DUO test is extremely accurate and can detect the HIV virus 28 days after infection. It combines
an antibody test for the HIV 1 & 2 strains of the virus with an antigen test for the p24 antigen. During the
first few weeks after someone becomes infected with HIV, p24 is produced rapidly and is detectable in
the blood. Recommended by the 2008 UK Guidelines on HIV testing.
Type of Test: Blood Sample | Results: Expected between 1-2 working days
HIV DNA PCR Testing (For exposures occurring 10 days before your HIV test):
This test can detect the presence of the HIV virus 10 days after exposure. PCR (Polymerase Chain
Reaction) is a testing method that extracts and amplifies the genetic material of HIV. Because HIV testing
using PCR DNA checks for the virus itself, it can provide a positive result sooner than other HIV tests.
HIV PCR testing is not 100% reliable and has a higher incidence of false positives than other HIV tests. If
you do receive the 10 day test, you should follow up with the HIV Duo Test at 28 days after the suspected
infection.
Type of Test: Blood Sample | Results: Expected between 5-7 working days
The number of people living undiagnosed
with HIV in the UK has trebled in the last
decade. A 2009 report by the Health
Protection Agency found the following:

2007, of whom over a quarter (27%)
were unaware of their infection.
- During 2007 there were 7,298 new
diagnoses of HIV, a similarly high figure
to the diagnoses made in each of the
previous four years.
- New HIV diagnoses among men who
have sex with men continue to increase
and over four-fifths of these infections
were probably acquired in the UK.
- The estimated number of persons
infected through heterosexual contact
within the UK has increased from 540
new diagnoses in 2003 to 1,130 in 2008.
